Guess what folks, We may have discovered still another branch of the family. I recently received a message from Howard Platz. He has raised questions that some of his ancestors have the same names and dates as our known line. It appears that they are from Everett Oliver Houghton (Jonathans brother). We are trying to fill in some blanks. He is under the impression that Everett Oliver's father is Oliver. They did not know of Jonathan but knew of a Reuben who was Everett Oliver's brother. Jonathan had several siblings, two of which were named Oliver and Reuben. I believe they are the same. This is based on several other known facts. Howard and I and others working on genealogy will continue to explore this probability. It will be difficult as records are rare for the period between 1750 and 1800, especially in that neck of the woods. Our main hope is that of finding someone else that has managed to uncover some documents or family lore that can shed some light on our search.

Gary Houghton of Canada forwarded the following information that is very important in our family search for information on our early ancestors that migrated from Vermont to Canada. There is a lot of missing information but Gary has just discovered some of the missing pieces to this puzzle. He has been working very hard this summer doing research at Queens University Archives, Kingston Ontario. The university holds papers of the Tett Family of Newboro, Ontario. The family was headed by Benjamam Tett. The family operated general stores, lumber mills, and other businesses in and around North Crosby Township in Leeds County, Ontario. The "day books" from the Newboro and Bedford Mills general stores recorded sales and other transactions, especially those crediting or debiting the accounts of the local residents.. Joseph, Reuben, Oliver and Jonathan Houghton maintained accounts with the Tetts for several years. It is not clear how long they were there but the earliest book was dated 1834. In addition Gary discovered land records for Jonathan and Oliver in Bedford Township, Frontenac County. Jonathan owned part of lot 21 & 22 on conc 12. He bought it before 1834 and sold it by 1853 (They left for Illinois in 1854). Oliver owned part of lot 22, conc 12. He sold it in 1836. It appears that all of Jonathans children may have been born here. Gary also provided an early map of the area.

Since obtaining this information I have started a timeline to assist in comparing events to the dates. I will continue to maintain it as facts are available. To see timeline document open this link.  Early Houghton Time-line from 1770 (Joseph's birth date) to post US Civil War period.

Dateline: FT Worth, TX 3/31/02 Derl Houghton The new information continues to come in on several branches of Jonathan and even some from his siblings branches. I am getting it on as fast as I can. Please bear with me. Also see pictures that have been added of some of those folks like Nancy Gilchrist the wife of Jonathan.

I have heard nothing new on the tragedy in Roswell. I know there has been a funeral and one of our cousins was buried and his young son was still in intensive care from his gunshot wounds. If there is anyone with information or details on this please email me.

Orville Houghton has had a tragedy in their family. A wreck claimed the life of a foster child and two of his own children were severely injured. I still don't have any details. Again if you know anything please email me.

Dateline: FT Worth, TX 3/29/02 Derl Houghton   Great News - I have been in contact with Joseph's brothers family in Michigan, Canada, Iowa, Washington etc.. We have made contact with family left behind in Michigan when our Joseph brought his family to Texas. It appears they have compiled much information about our family there and where they moved through the current generation.  I talked to a Gary Houghton in Canada and another cousin in Michigan. They are descendents of Jonathan as well. They have been searching for our Josephs family that left Michigan. They are as thrilled as I that we have made contact. I have already received 42 pages of genealogy information on them and a (pdf) copy of Jonathan and Nancy Bible Pages recording births and deaths etc.  I am getting the information on this page as quickly as I can. It is time consuming and I don't have a lot of time to spend on it right now but I will publish updates as I get them on. I am adding the Bible pages and new information starting with the oldest information first.  The new oldest information is that we now know who Jonathans father and mother were. His name was also Joseph. His wife was Hanna.  As Paul Harvey says, "Stand by for news". To see bible click on BIBLE. To see new information go to Joseph under Genealogy.

Roswell, NM (Newspaper Clipping) 2/24/02: This story is about Earnest Houghton's Grandson Randy and Randy's son.

There is no additional information at this time. The following information was forwarded to Lester by Judy then to me today 3/19/02. We are sorry to hear about such tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Earnest, Allen (Randy's father), and especially the child who at last account was still alive. We will post more info as it is available.

Three people are dead and two critically injured in Roswell after a man began shooting at emergency workers responding to a fire early this morning, authorities say.

Roswell Fire Department Battalion Chief Gary Rogers - who said he was called to the scene after the events - said this morning that a fire crew responded to a report of an explosion and fire at a house in a residential area about 1 a.m. today.

Shortly after they began battling the blaze, firefighters were fired upon from a house across the street from the burning building. Numerous shot were fired, he said.

"They took cover behind the fire truck, and it got shot up pretty good," Rogers said.

Emergency Medical Services technician Steve Lovato was shot and killed, said Officer Robert Giles of the Roswell Police Department. Roswell Fire Chief Louis Jones was shot in the head, Rogers said, and taken to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, in critical condition.

Giles said it appeared that an occupant of the burning house had run across the street to the home of Randy Houghton, whom he apparently shot and killed. "He (Houghton) was just being a good Samaritan," Giles said.

A 4-year-old child was also shot, Giles said. The child, who hadn't been identified, might have been Houghton's, Giles said, but that hadn't been confirmed as of early this morning. The child was airlifted to Lubbock in critical condition.

The man in Houghton's house, whom Giles described only as a "black male subject," eventually shot himself in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, Giles said.

The house burned to the ground. Investigators this morning were trying to piece together the cause of the fire and determine the identity of its occupant.

When asked whether the house might have been the location of a meth lab, Rogers said, "Well, you can draw your own conclusions. Houses don't usually explode."

Processing illegal methamphetamines involves the use of volatile solvents and other inflammable chemicals. Fires and explosions are not uncommon in the process.

Giles said: "There has been some speculation (about that), but nothing has been confirmed."

A note from Gerry:  Mama isn't doing too well. She has been to the emergency room three times lately and was in the hospital three days. She had trouble breathing, blood pressure went real high and they are having trouble keeping her diabetes stabilized. She has congestive heart failure, her heart is just getting weaker. She is 89. I know she would enjoy getting cards or calls from any of the folks. She isn't able to move about her room anymore and sleeps a lot. Her telephone number is 501-675-9114 and her address is Rosa Whitley - Room 6, Oak Manor Nursing & Rehab Center, Booneville, AR 72927.

Well, The Houghton Family Reunion was held as scheduled.  There was a fair response and everyone seemed pleased. A lot of fun was had as everyone caught up on visiting.  Sorry we missed so many of the family that was unable to attend.  It was decided that the next years meeting will be at David & Vonnie Estes Hunting Lodge a short distance from the Sylvester location. You can get some idea of the facility and location by logging onto: www.doublehorseshoeranches.com    They have been so gracious as to offer its use.  A specific date will be determined, but it will be around the first of November as it has to be after the hunting season break.

With today's disaster heavy on my heart, I did not want one more minute to go by without telling all of you how much you mean to me.  I know there are thousands of families that wish they had just one more opportunity to tell their loved one what they meant in their lives.  God has given us that chance and I am grateful.  Each one of you have touched me and impacted my life in one way or another and I appreciate you and love you dearly.

I encourage you to stop and take time to say a prayer, hug your mate and your children, make a phone call, and have enough courage to settle any differences you may have with someone.  If you know of someone who has not yet acknowledged Jesus as their personal savior, share the Gospel with them so that we may all be together in Heaven.

Please join me in praying for our Country and it's leadership.  Remember the families that have lost their friends and loved ones. Thank our Lord for the opportunity to pray as a nation for the common interest to live in freedom.  Ask for God's speed in defeating the evil that confronts us in the form of terrorism.  I will also be thanking God, The Father, for you all and for what you have meant in my life.

I love you all, Derl Houghton

I have been in touch with Jeannine (Houghton) Robertson, a granddaughter of Sherman Houghton, one of the sons of Joseph & Mary.  They live in the McCaulley Area. We had lost contact with that branch after Annie her mother pasted away.  She is excited to find us and very anxious to learn about and meet the family.  She plans to attend the upcoming Hamlin Houghton Reunion in October.  I will get a bio on their family members on as soon as I have the information.  She has volunteered to serve as that branch council member. See that page for specific contact information.

Well, we have a new grandson and a new member to the Houghton Family. Brett Hunter Houghton was born at 8:43 PM on 31 Jul 01 at College Station Medical Center, College Station, Texas. He is the first son of Clint & Amy Houghton and 10th grandchild of Derl & Karen Houghton.  He was a big one. He weighed 9 lbs. 2 oz. and 21 1/2 inches long. Amy had to have a C-Section because he was just too big. Both are doing great and scheduled to go home Thursday morning. Clint is attending A&M University on his last semester of an Engineering Degree. My son is one proud daddy. Congratulations, and good job to both of the new parents.  Enjoy the most precious gift you will ever receive on this earth.

Hello Family. I am Shirley Walker (Rosa (Houghton) Whitley's Youngest Daughter). I am so glad for this Houghton Family Page Online.  I realize that not many of the family are logging on yet but I am curious about a medical problem encountered by some of my immediate family and some extended family.  I would like to know if other family members have encountered Ulcerated Colitis or Krohns Disease? I have a son that went through this about ten years ago and we almost lost him.  He had to have surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Another son was diagnosed with Krohns Disease two years later. They say they are not inherited but I have a sibling that has a son who has been diagnosed with Colitis and two of his daughters has Krohns. As you can see I am quite curious if others have had the problem and if so would they contact me and share any knowledge with me. - Shirley Walker swalk@cei.net

The Derl & Karen Houghton family has taken on new proportions and has had many changes over the past 10 years.  We have 6 grown children (3 Boys) (3 Girls) and 9 grandchildren (3 Girls, 5 boys) and 1 boy due later this month.  All of our children except Troy (the youngest) is married.  He is still a bachelor. Anybody know a nice girl? I'm sure he will thank me for that!!  I retired in 95 from a career with the US Govt. and worked for a large company for a couple of years and got caught in the downsizing.  I began a safety consulting business for past few years.  Karen is a patient coordinator for a world famous cosmetic surgeon.  Three of our children live near us in surrounding cities. Clint is in his last semester at Texas A&M finishing an Engineering Degree. His wife Amy has worked as an insurance agent but is very heavy with child at the moment. She is due about Aug 1 or probably before as she is felling some occasional contractions.  We are excited about the boy she is going to have. His name is going to be Brett Hunter Houghton.  Gary & Jessica (my oldest son) have a son named Kyle Alexander Houghton. They live in Weatherford and Gary is a computer whiz and is Operations Manager for a large Ft Worth Computer Company.  Melissa (my oldest daughter lives in Houston, TX and has a hair saloon in Laport, TX. She has two sons Chase & Taylor Fenner.  Pam lives in Aledo, TX practically a suburb of FT Worth. She has 4 children (2 Boys, 2 Girls), Preston, Matthew, Kelsey, & Brittany.  She is a housewife.  Her husband Michael is a sales representative for an instrument company that sells high tech survey equipment.  Troy also works there.  Kellie (middle daughter) lives in New Albany, Indiana and has two children, Ashley & Adam. Her husband is chief engineer for an automotive parts manufacturer there.  They are about to visit us for a couple of weeks. Can't wait to see them.  Karen and I are in fairly decent medical condition for our age and spend most of our time working or being with our family. We would like to hear from any of the family and especially those we have never met.  We are looking forward to spending some quality time with our grandchildren over the next month, both existing and arriving.

The Hamlin Houghton Family Reunion is planned for Oct 26 & 27, I believe.  I will have the specifics on that as soon as possible.  It is held in Sylvester, TX near Hamlin. It is usually held at the Sylvester Community Center. It is hosted by Yvonne Estes family (Daughter of C. M. Houghton). It usually has attendees from the Hamlin area and some from other areas but primarily the Hamlin bunch and their descendents.  They would like to expand it to include everyone who would like to come.  It is an effort to carry on what used to be held at Jackie Houghton's home in Mineral Wells, TX.  It has never been as big but is gaining momentum.  Again I will have more on the particulars as they become available.

I plan to make a quick trip to Arkansas next week to see Rose Whitley and her family in Boonville.  She is in a nursing home and still sharp as a tack.  She has her own phone in her room and I'm sure she would love to hear from her extended family.  She certainly remembers all of you. It has to ring several times cause her knees are slow to get to the phone.  I ask her for permission to list her number and she said "Shoot yeah I'd Love to hear from 'em."  Her number Is (501) 675-9114.  She told me would love to hear from you.  I plan to take my digital camera and take shots of some of her old photos to put on the site.  - Derl Houghton
