* HEINRICH LOUIS AUGUST KRASCHE: Born
Heinrich Louis August Krasche in 1884, but known through most of his life as
August Louis Henry Krasche, nicknamed "Gus". He was the first of
Friedrich Christian August Krasche's children to be born in the U.S., his next
oldest sibling having been born in Germany in 1882. Details of most of his early
life are unknown, including when and why he came to the area of Woodward IA. He
met his wife- to- be, Jessie Houghton, while he was a telephone operator in
Bouton IA. Jessie was a telephone operator in Woodward IA. and the met after
talking frequently as operators. Gus farmed what is known as the "Houghton
Farm" 1 mile south of Woodward IA. for many years, and died of a heart
attack while plowing his field preparing for spring planting. He was found on
his tractor, which he had shut off during the heart attack. He was a happy man
who loved to watch wrestling on TV with several of his friends who faithfully
gathered in his house for the weekly telecast. He kept one cow,
"Bessie", a Guernsey milk cow. He rented the Houghton Farm most of his
later years, having lost the deed during the depression due to his inability to
repay on time a loan of a few hundred dollars. One often-told story was his
finding an albino horned owl, which he sold to the White Owl cigar company as an
advertising device for "a nice sum of money".
