Countries and States where The Houghton Family is known to have previously settled. New states will be added as we learn about them. New Items will be added as we get them or have time to develop them and put them on. There will be lots of photos, maps, drawings etc. If you have items of interest or photos etc that will be helpful, please send a digital copy to the webmaster via email. They will be added to a master file and utilized where possible. We know that there are many descendents who have moved to other states but not yet identified. They will be added as they become known. Many of us have been somewhat transitory in our careers but most have returned to one of the places listed above. At this point we begin to trace our first known location in Vermont, Quebec, Ontario, Illinois, Michigan, and Texas.
The "English" history
items were taken from
other Houghton Family Sites and features a Houghton History in
England and references our ancient Norman Heritage. The specific line stated in the English History may very well
be our own roots
leading to our "Houghton" introduction to the new colonies via Ralph
Houghton or his cousin John Houghton. This is not yet verified. However, it
appears we may be from Ralph. It makes interested reading. The "US or Early British
Colonies" history begins with earliest known information about our
ancestors. To date the last known Early home was New York Territory known today
as Vermont. This information will be updated as facts are available. It appears
that we are close to being able to affix probable migration trail back to early
Massachusetts. The "Canadian"
history begins with Joseph and Hannah moving from New York Territory or Vermont
into Canada about 1805 and settling with others from Vermont in an area just
north of what is now the east end of Lake Ontario where The ST. Lawrence River
enters the lake. They lived in Frontenac and Leeds Counties in places named
Bedford, Westport, Newboro, and North Crosby Township. Most of the family
migrated back to US in 1855 but at least one son (Martin) stayed and thrived in
Canada to this day. The Migration from Canada to US via "Illinois"
began resumption of US history. Jonathan and his family migrated to
Illinois in 1855. It is believed that some of his siblings had preceded him in
the move to US by maybe as much as 10-20 years. It is not clear yet who and
where they settled. Jonathans sons enlist in the Union Army, US Civil War.
They lived in Illinois until 1866, after the end of the civil war. The "Michigan"
history begins about 1866 when Jonathan and some of his family moved to Michigan
where they obtained land grants and established farms. This occurred after
Jonathans sons return from The US Civil War and most of his family made the
move. Other family members either stayed in Illinois or moved to neighboring
states. The "Texas" history
began in 1875 when Joseph Houghton (son of Jonathan) and wife Mary left their
family in Michigan and came to Texas. It is not clear why. It is rumored that
Joseph and his father had a falling out. Joseph and his sons were farmers.
Their descendents are many. A great many descendents have stayed in Texas. However, the
pioneer spirit moved some of those descendents to settle in other states, including California,
Oregon, and Nevada.
