The following features are now available to you on "Yahoo Houghton Family Group".
Houghton Family Group Site

Message Board - to post interactive messages and replies.
This lets you post your own message from your computer and allows others to reply or comment. All messages and comments are kept for a period of time before they are deleted. This gives you an opportunity to post it exactly as you want it, at anytime. Please keep the rhetoric to a minimum with no offensive language!  I know we don't have anyone that uses that tone but it is required to be stated so as to enable me to enforce this rule.

Chat Room
- to chat with other registered "Houghton Family" members.
This allows registered group members to type real time messages to other selected registered members of Houghton Family in a private chat room.

Contact Page
- to maintain your contact information so others may contact you.
This allows each member to post the current contact information such as address, phone numbers, email, or other methods to a private database accessible only to Houghton Family Group Members. This will allow you to maintain it current or put only the information you want there.

Photos
- to post your photos where they can be shared with the family.
A database containing folders for  photo albums for each of Joseph's descendents (5ea.) have been created. There are sub-folders under those folders for their successive generations. You may post or view a photo in those folders. Please share photos but whenever possible post group pictures to minimize space. This will enable us to be more efficient. We are not limited to the number of photos in an album but we are limited to a total of 30 MB. If photos are small (approx. 3x5) we may get 200 ea. if larger it may only be a couple of dozen. So lets keep them small. I want to place photos of the older generations on the Houghton Family Page where I am not limited to space.

Files
- to post a copy of a document you want to share with the family.
This may include a text file you have that you want to share with other family members.

Other Database Features
may be added later.

To access or use the new Yahoo Group Feature, you must be registered as a Houghton Family group member at that site.  You will be approved by myself or Lester. You complete the registration information requested on the screen and you are part of the group.  The site is confidential and no one outside of the peripheral Houghton Family will be approved. The group is not even listed in Yahoo listings. This  way we can keep it restricted to the family and as confidential as you can get on the web.

11/25/01  We activated our new group communications page on Yahoo Groups. Hope everyone enjoys this feature. If there are questions or comments, please contact us through the "Input" page.

6/25/01  The new Houghton web page is now online. It is still being developed and data is being added daily. If you have accurate information about anyone, please notify me via webmaster or Feed-Back Form in "Input" Page.  I will add it to the record.  Anyone having any other information that would add to the site feel free to send it.

6/25/01   I am also looking for volunteers, one from each family branch to serve on the Council to help coordinate the page and serve as a point of contact for your branch.  Should be someone with technical capability to do email and some internet skills. It would be helpful if they also had a good knowledge of their entire family branch. If the families are too big we can add additional council members. This is  a big job for one person to accomplish alone.

7/04/01   I would like to thank Dave Reedy for all the work he put into his efforts to investigate our family genealogy.  He has been working on it for more than 10 years. He probably has the most accurate record to date.  He is a professional person that does good work.  Thanks for the newsletters you and Rosa Mae produced.  They have been invaluable to me in creating this web page. I borrowed some of them from my brother Jack.  There was only Vol.1 No. 1 - 3, Vol. 2 No.1-2, and Vol. 3 No.3.  If there are other Vol's, I would love to get a copy.

I am in the process of collecting that data and establishing that information on a time line of events that begins in 1803 and ends with present date. It is maintained on a private file and will be used to remember birthdays, anniversaries, and other news worthy events.  It also provides a common source for an up to date record of the entire family for genealogy purposes. It will be made available to family members but will not be provided on the web page unless everyone requests that it be added. If it is added prior to those request, it will be absent specific dates but will depict the year of the event.

7/03/01   I ran into my first problem.  As you can see by the change in the format of the individual member pages,  I deleted birth dates of living members and dropped middle names in the young children.  One member had concerns about personal security. It is my intent to delete birthdays, places of birth, dates and locations of marriages or anything that you feel is an invasion of your privacy.  In addition, I have deleted "Contact" information for everyone but myself and those who have approved adding it. If you want other family members to know how to contact you please send me the information you want in that space.  If you wish for there to be some information in the "Narrative" space, send me what you would like to see there.  I will not put any privacy sensitive information there.  I will put common knowledge descriptions or history items known about deceased members.

As you can see our goal of creating an internet focal point for the Houghton Family with a true genealogy record is impossible.  Enough people might opt out as to make it ineffective. So each family will have to be responsible for maintaining their own genealogy record in private and this page will serve only as a focal point for The Houghton Family.  Hopefully, the record compiled of the deceased members in the "In Memory Page" will be a guide or assist in your genealogy information. This is unfortunate because I have had conversations with descendents of family I did not even know about and knew little or nothing of us. They expressed a desire to know the rest of the family.

I know how Rose Mae Emm and her Son-In-Law, Dave Reedy must have felt in their efforts to pull this family together ten years ago with a quarterly newsletter.  The lack of participation due to "fear that someone is going to know your business" or "let someone else do it", creates a big hole in ones effort.  It is a personal labor that one can not appreciate until you have taken it on. I will continue to maintain this site until it is obvious that not enough people will participate.  I believe that family is important, including your cousins.  This family has always been a Christian based and oriented one with deep convictions and sense of commitment and responsibility. We have always lived up to our ancient motto: "In Spite of Wrong" and most of us did not even know it existed. Lets not let a little thing like the occasional evils of today's society keep this family apart.

I want to assure everyone having questions regarding their privacy, that I will attempt to maintain the integrity and respond immediately when something is in question.  The web page is published on a sub directory of my business page www.oshelp.com which has no link to the houghtonfamily sub-directory.  That sub-directory is not advertised nor does the general public have any knowledge of its existence. Only our family should know the address or how to find it.
