Notice: This site has not been maintained for a couple of years. That is a result of several interruptions in my personal life and lack of participation by many family members. It is my intent to try to bring it up to speed. If you know of changes or additions that should be made, please contact me with the information via the input button above. Derl Houghton, Webmaster
DNA TESTING Charlie Vella a Houghton Genealogy researcher is asking for Houghton Male Descendent volunteers for DNA testing to determine if and which current lines may be related to the early Houghton Emigrants. This will help determine which of those we are related to and help verify our related line. See the information at his website.

Welcome:
Welcome
Cousins!......This site began as an effort to document information for my known
branch of the Houghton Family. That is Joseph and Mary Houghton that left
Michigan and came to Texas about 1875. They had three small sons and a fourth
was born shortly after their arrival in Texas. It had been established
that Joseph's parents was Jonathan and Nancy Houghton who migrated from Canada
to Illinois to Michigan. Jonathan (1803) had lived in Vermont as a child
prior to moving to Canada. However, since establishing the web site, other
family branches have emerged and became apparent that Jonathan had a large
family and his parents (Joseph and Hannah) were discovered. This led to
the discovery of Jonathan's siblings and some of their off-spring as well.
It is believed that Joseph's father was Oliver Houghton. There is some
speculation as to which Oliver and where his family came from. Until recently it
was generally believed that Oliver was out of Ralph Houghton of Ralph and John fame.
However, recent developments in DNA testing has revealed that a couple of
descendents of Old Joseph was out of John. Continued DNA is testing in the search is currently active. We
need volunteers.
Welcome to the Houghton Family Online. This page is dedicated to the memory of those past and their vision of keeping family together. In some ways that is still a difficult thing to do even in modern times. However, technology can be a wonderful thing if used properly. Thus this page is an effort to utilize that technology to connect the various family branches again and hopefully keep us connected. The computer and internet provides a media for maintaining current information on each family with instant access to other family members. Anyone having suggestions or ideas regarding this page feel free to notify me via email to webmaster or select the "input" button above. It is already formatted to handle any type of information.
It is my hope and that all persons in the many branches of the Houghton Family will participate. Please help me to make this page informative and best of all, a lost and found department of wandering family members. Think of it as a watering hole where we can all come together in spirit and drink from the well of our fathers and mothers and share with our brothers, sisters, and cousins in our rather large family. We share a very strong heritage of ordinary people doing extraordinary things in spite of the wrong that comes our way. Our linage is one of pioneers and farmers always breaking new ground while maintaining a bond to God, The Soil and All Things Natural. Our parents believed that with hard work, faith and the grace of God, we will overcome any obstacle. They raised good families of strong individuals who went out and did the same thing.

About
The Site:
We have been online for several years now. We have grown tremendously from what we
started with. This site began as an effort to document information for my known
branch of the Houghton Family.
One of our line (Dave Reedy) did a lot of research 10-15 years prior and was
responsible for uncovering much about the family. However, since
establishing the web site, other family branches have emerged and became
apparent that Jonathan had a large family and his parents (Joseph and Hannah)
were discovered. This led to the discovery of Joseph's siblings and some
of their off-spring as well. It has been a real challenge to get the information
posted as it comes in. I seem to stay a little behind but am working on it
frequently. We have established a "Council" of representatives from
the various branches to facilitate the collection and documentation of
information from their respective families. I need additional volunteers to
gather and edit the information on their families. I would like to have a
bio-sheet on each person past and present. I have not had a lot of luck from
family with information.
We now have about 5 times as many relatives listed than I knew existed. I know there are at least that many more out there that we haven't documented yet. I need to hear from you. There are several of you doing active genealogy searches. This site can serve as a bulletin board and source of information to be shared. It has already produced results in filling in the blanks and missing puzzle pieces. It also raises questions that others may have the answer to.
I am in the process of catching up on some information I already have and make changes on History Pages to reflect what we now know. I will post a notice of new pages I have modified on this page. Please check your family bio-sheets for accuracy or for information that may be missing.

Privacy
Statement:
Please review your information on this site. If your information on your
bio-sheet is incorrect or
you feel it violates your privacy in any way, notify the webmaster
immediately. It will be corrected or deleted per your request. If
you would like to be contacted by other family members who may not have your
address or other contact information or you have no objection to posting it on
your bio-page, please provide the information you want (address, phone, email)
and it will be posted in the contact space. Send information via webmaster
or select the "input" button above.
You must also provide information for the "Narrative" space if you
want a summary description of yourself on your bio-sheet. It is my
intent to maintain this site with utmost integrity regarding personal privacy to the extent possible
on a family or genealogy site. We originally intended to list all of the kinds of
information found on a genealogy site but that is not possible and still maintain some
level of privacy for those still living. However, much of that kind of
information can be found elsewhere on the internet. This site is located in a sub directory of my
business site which
has no visible links to this directory. However, the site has been picked up and
linked to by other popular genealogy sites. It may be seen by anyone searching
for it.
In addition to maintaining the web page I am maintaining separately and privately a time line of events from 1803 to present date. To maintain the timeline. it is necessary to know all dates of events in our lives. I would appreciate that information from you so that we can have a true genealogy record of our families past, present, and future. Such information includes birth dates, date of marriages, and deaths. I am maintaining that information in a separate file and will not normally place entire birth dates on the web page unless person is deceased. Narrative information on deceased family members will be for the purpose of paying tribute to them by those who knew and loved them. It may also provide some historical information. It may also contain photos or historical documents associated with that family member or their immediate family. If you have any objections regarding this statement please notify the webmaster.

Webmaster:
The webmaster is
currently Derl Houghton, eldest son of Donnie and Richard Houghton via
Frank/Oscar Carver Houghton. I am initiating this page on my business website.
I plan to share the responsibility as webmaster with my brother, Lester Elmore.
In addition, I am enlisting the help of representatives from each branch or
major group of the family. I will utilize them as members of a council to assist
in gathering and coordinating information. Hopefully that will make some
communications easier. I promise that if I can't maintain this page any longer I
will pass it on to someone who is willing to do so.

Disclaimer Note: We have recently found what we believe is Jonathan's brother Rueben's descendents. Actual documentation has not been provided but they appear to be from Jonathans Brother "Rueben". Because of the apparent connection that line has been added to the page and will be treated as part of Joseph Houghton's line until shown to be incorrect. We welcome them to participate in this effort.
